Every French word Rashi uses on the Chumash, with what it means, what it became in modern French, and its English or Yiddish relatives. Then, across the whole Chumash and in his own words: his grammar, how he settles the verse, and his use of the Targum.
Every word of Rashi and every verse is quoted as printed. The readings of the French words, their Latin-letter spellings and their Hebrew meanings are quoted from Moshe Catane, Otzar La'azei Rashi (Jerusalem 1988), who corrects the printed spellings from manuscripts. Where the printed Rashi spells a word differently, both are shown. Where the word could be found in manuscript Leipzig 1 (13th century, as transcribed by AlHaTorah), that spelling is shown as a third witness; it was picked out of the transcription by Claude and should be checked against the manuscript before it is relied on. English meanings, modern forms, similar words and word histories are study notes written for this guide. Where this guide argues a reading of its own, against Catane or between him and the printed text, the card says so in a marked box and gives its grounds.
